Maria Callas sang more operas by Verdi than by any other composer, but Amelia in Un Ballo in Maschera, a role she was born to play, occupies a special place in her repertoire. Callas first encountered this complex part in 1939: as part of a concert given by the pupils of Maria Trivella, the young Maria Kalogeropoulou performed an extract from Act III of Un Ballo. A year later, having begun her studies with Elvira Hidalgo and about to turn professional, she broached Act II. She went back to New York from Athens in 1945, but failed to obtain any engagements, returning to Europe in 1947 for her debut in La Giocondo in Verona. Within the space of a year, she had sung Isolde (in Italian) at La Fenice in Venice, Turandot in Udine, and her first Verdi role: Leonora in La forza del destino, at Trieste in 1948. In 1951 she gave a concert in Turin, featuring, among other items, the 'Ecco I'orrido campo' scene from Un hollo and, in a dazzling display of pyrotechnics, Proch's Variations on 'Deh! torna, mio bene'. On 15 July that year, she sang Amelia's second aria, 'Morro, ma prima in grazia' for Mexican radio. Audiences would have to wait a little longer for a fully staged Ballo.
During an exceptionally intense ten-year period, Callas tackled no fewer than ten Verdi operas: Lo forza was followed by Aida in 1948, Nobucco in 1949 (Abigaille), Il trovotore in 1950 (Leonora), La travioto (Violetta) and I vespri sicilioni (Elena) in 1951, Rigoletto (Gilda) and Macbeth (Lady Macbeth) in 1952, Don Carlo (Elisabetta, 1954), and finally Un hollo in moschero in 1957, as the La Scala season opener, almost 20 years after her first brush with Amelia. This production also proved to be her last on-stage encounter with tenor Giuseppe di Stefano, one of her favourite partners in the recording studio. The two of them had recorded Un hollo the year before - one of only two cases in which Callas recorded an opera before singing it on stage (the other was Modomo Butterfly in 1954 with Herbert von Karajan). Whether you prefer the 1956 studio version or the performance captured live on 7 December 1957, also in the EMI catalogue, the comparison of the two is a delight in every way.
