One of the salient features of Gilles Coronado is certainly its absolute singularity. Leader of his own group, Urban Mood, here over 20 years, he has traveled all contemporary jazz territories in a perpetual quest for difference, otherness, or alteration of the ambient musical discourse. Its multiple and elective affinities have led with Louis Sclavis but also the collective Hask, and groups of this movement (Thot, Print, and allies overseas Quievrain that are Aka Moon). Shaped like many musicians of this nebula by academies Summer Banff Centre for Fine Arts, in Western Canada, it keeps track of the liberties won in this context, in terms of rhythms, structures, and a wild claim of artistic independence. A renaissance of Urban Mood, two years ago, had associated with Matthieu Metzger (also passed by a group of Louis Sclavis), Jozef Dumoulin (which now succeeds Antonin Rayon), and a long-time collaborator, crossed in well adventures: the drummer Franck Vaillant. And it's even a new start for the key change: the group is simply called Coronado, and this is a group, rather than the identity of a leader. It is believed here and there recognize multiple influences from progressive-rock or rock short while, the repetitive music, serial music, and adventures that arose from three decades of extension movement M'Base. But no membership no chapel, no less radical claim of a complex beat, a confusing sense of musical dramaturgy, and freedom of each member in this very collective device. Themes (some of which already belonged to the latest version of Urban Mood) are a measure of the inventive humor of their securities (Low water flows, the end justifies the beginning ....); and the intervention of the singer Katerine (accomplice in further adventures of the guitarist on the side of Gros Cube by Alban Darche and "Francis and his painters' group) provides additional note shifted freshness.--Xavier Prevost
