With the Barry O'Hare produced debut album "Militancy" - released in 1997 - Daweh Congo delivered an album that was soon being hailed as a modern roots classic. Vocally and lyrically Daweh Congo made such a strong impression that many Reggae followers regarded him as one of the most promising new roots singers to emerge in the second half of the nineties. However, apart from a handful of well received 7" singles, little was heard of Daweh Congo thereafter, although he was still voicing songs for several producers.
Now Daweh Congo is back with a new album, which surely will bring him into the limelight once again. To come straight to the point : "Guidance" is a well balanced follow up to his highly acclaimed and stunning "Militancy" album. It's a fascinating and excellent effort from an artist, who seemingly has taken his time to build his career on solid ground. "Guidance" was entirely recorded at Jet Star's own "Cave Studios" in London, with such fine musicians as Mafia & Fluxy, Henry "Buttons" Tenyue and Dwayne Burke providing a great selection of nyabinghi steppers and deep roots riddims behind this roots chanter par excellence. Besides some reworked riddims like the Abysinnians' "Declaration Of Rights" and "Bunny Wailer's "Battering Down Sentence", all riddims are fresh originals. Furthermore this set benefits from the excellent mixing skills of Gussie P, who truly has done a great job.
Daweh Congo's lyrics - printed on the CD insert - deal with topics like praise of Jah, upliftment of the spirit, African heritage and peace, love & unity. Besides that one witnesses a strong thread of social commentary running through this appealing set of songs. All twelve tracks are above par, no weak tune to be found, which makes it hard to point out the standouts.
