Leonard Bernstein’s first complete cycle of the Mahler symphonies, in the Japanese stereo/multichannel releases of what were originally 3-channel recordings.
When Mahler died only the first movement adagio of his 10th symphony was largely completed (along with a small third movement entitled Purgatorio). Bernstein steadfastly refused to perform any performing versions of the sketches of the complete 10th, even going so far as to insist that even if Mahler had lived, he would not have been able to complete the 10th symphony. Accordingly, only the adagio was recorded.
This piece is joined by Janet Baker’s performance of the Kindertotenlieder (“songs on the death of children”), with Bernstein leading the Israel Philharmonic in accompaniment.
For those who want to keep their Mahler Symphonies straight, a helpful guide.
If you want Bernstein on Mahler, there’s no better place than his televised “Young People’s Concert” on Mahler.
Musicweb has a comprehensive review of the entire cycle in the DSD remastering (but on RBCD)
