Taken from the Document Catalogue, this double CD is a solid collection of some of the finest tracks performed by Memphis Minnie, one of the most influential female country blues singers to have ever recorded. Memphis Minnie was born Lizzie Douglas in Algiers, Lousiana on June 3, 1897. She was given her first guitar as a Christmas present at the tender age of 8 years and was soon performing on the streets of Memphis. Her recording career began in 1929 when she was married to her second husband 'Kansas Joe' McCoy. This recording partnership worked together for six years and recorded extensively. Minnie was an accomplished guitarist with a strong singing voice and her recordings with Kansas Joe showed her at her best. Over the years she also performed alongside the best in the blues business including Little Walter, Bumble Bee Slim, Charlie McCoy, Bukka White and Sunnyland Slim amongst others. Memphis Minnie was and remains one of the most influential blues singers to have ever recorded and even now she continues to have a strong impact on the Blues world. Muddy Waters, Koko Taylor, Baby Boy Warren, Homesick James and Bonnie Raitt all credit her with influencing their work. Includes informative booklet notes by Gary Atkinson.
