On April 29, Miles Nielsen, the son of Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen, will release Heavy Metal with his band, the Rusted Hearts. You can listen to the title track above.
Heavy Metal, which can be pre-ordered at Miles’ website, is Nielsen’s third studio album. His music can be described as muscular folk-rock with an emphasis on harmonies and bridges that often go in different directions — imagine Paul McCartney fronting the Heartbreakers instead of Tom Petty and had Fleetwood Mac as background singers. Some of the songs on Heavy Metal were previewed when Nielsen opened for Cheap Trick in their hometown of Rockford, Ill., in December.
“In a day and age where people focus on singles and following musical trends, I couldn’t be more pleased to be releasing the album,” he told Chicago’s RedEye, where “Heavy Metal” premiered. “Thankfully, for our third release, it’s an album made up of 10 singles, all cohesively woven into a sonic musical tapestry.”
Nielsen will face some competition from his dad’s band: On April 1, Cheap Trick are set to deliver Bang Zoom Crazy … Hello, their first album since The Latest landed in 2009. The new record coincides with the band’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 15.
Heavy Metal arrives at a time where several other children of rock royalty are claiming the spotlight for their music. Nick Clemons, the son of the late E Street Band saxophone player Clarence Clemons, put out We All Bleed the Same last month, and the sons of the Kinks‘ Dave Davies and the Band‘s Robbie Robertson, who have been collaborating for nearly 10 years, recently released their score to the movie Condemned.
