English Scots, Irish or Welsh folk music has a long traditional heritage, although the English element has often been sadly maligned and neglected in its native country in the last 40 years. This was not always so: the British folk revival was grounded in work by Englishman Cecil Sharp at the turn of the 20th century. In 1911 Sharp founded the English Folk Dance Society, which promoted traditional dances and which later marged with the Folk Song Society in 1932 to form the English Folk Dance and Song Society. British folk music survived punk, disco and new wave and the tradition continues today. On these two CDs you can discover the journey British folk has taken from the Fifties revival through the heyday of the folk clubs to its modern renaissance. Enjoy the journey...
