In the fall of 2010, Dawn Estes (vocals, harmonica) and Steve Henry (vocals, acoustic guitar) hooked up with multi-instrumentalist Steve Richey (vocals, mandolin, banjo, dobro, slide guitar) as a “small casual group” interested in periodically getting together to noodle around with a little “roots music.” Six months later, and with the addition of Shelly Duell (vocals, violin), a full-grown Americana band had been formed. In the fall of 2011 additional members Michael Brown (bass, vocals) , Scott Thompson (drums), and Newell Hardy (pedal steel, guitar, banjo, misc) came aboard to round out the current lineup.

The hardest thing about being in a band is getting consensus on a name. The band decided a roots music band needed to literally consider the roots under their feet and the name Black Dirt Tango sprang from the black land prairie of Texas.

Black Dirt Tango plays a mix of roots music -- both original and tribute. Its sound comes from genres as varied as bluegrass, alt-country, Texas roots, contemporary country and country-rock. The two things that are always common is the band’s commitment to multiple vocal harmonies and the strong desire for the band and audience to interact and, most importantly, to have fun!
