Carl Vine (born 1954) is an Australian composer who has flown under my radar for quite some time now. I have a friend who is from Australia who introduced me to Vine's music, but for some reason I never bothered to investigate his music. It seems that right now ABC Classics (a division of Universal Music) and Tall Poppies (Australian classical label) are the only labels that continue to promote Vine's music.
I've heard many phrases used to describe Vine's music and one that I read recently was "Neo-Tonal," but honestly this label is misleading and really doesn't add up to much. Vine is hard to pindown as a composer. The music is tonal, but not in cliched Romantic sense. There are still composers who write meaningful and lyrical music, but ultimately they're fighting a terrible battle as today's classical audience has such a strong reverence with music that has already happened and they, quite frankly, don't want to hear anything new or fresh. Thankfully, there are many classical listeners, like myself, that believe there can still be good music made, it's all a matter of finding the composers who fit what you believe. This all comes down to subjectivity as with everything.
Vine has composed seven symphonies, so this ABC set is now, sadly, out-of-date, but hopefully we'll have a recording of his 7th symphony soon. This cycle is especially fine. Vine is an adept orchestrator There's something strangely familiar with his music it's almost nostalgic in a way, but at the same time, you realize that the music sounds like nothing you've heard. It has a very mysterious, airy quality to it. I actually enjoyed all of the symphonies. If I had to pick one over the others it would probably be Symphony No. 3. This is an especially fine work.
