Justin: Our first album, Domestic Bliss(ters) is the soundtrack of a specifically rough patch of our marriage.

If you think of an epic movie like The Gladiator, the first scene generally has a tendency to be the most tragic - and without redemption, the plot line will be purely tragedy – it’s not until the end that the epic story is told. (This may seem like a tangent, just give it a second.) In movies like Braveheart or Gladiator, the first scene gives context for the rest of the story. If the movie ended there, as marriages often do, it wouldn’t be an epic, it would be a tragedy. There would be victims whose lives were permanently altered because they didn’t choose to live out the arc of their struggle and fully experience the extent of character development that is possible in an epic. Unfortunately, a lot of stories, relationships, end that way – there’s conflict, there’s struggle, the cameras pan out, the credits roll, and it ends like some sort of romantic comedy gone haywire. While sometimes it’s good to unplug and spend two hours watching and laughing at a romantic comedy, it’s not a movie that you leave impacted by. Romantic comedies aren’t plot lines you walk away from wanting to be a better person, wanting to learn karate, or wondering people will think back on the impactful scenes of your life saying it was “epic.”

Pop art is full of “romantic-comedy-like" ideas – you can turn on the radio and be bombarded by songs about the love buzz you feel at the bar when you meet someone for the first time, but the struggle that relationships actually face after the airport scene in the rain, you know, where they kiss in slow motion for the first time, the struggle after that isn’t often addressed – the day to day struggle, the mature conflict of making two lives one - the domestic bliss………….ters.
