In 1978, one of my favorite songs was the Rolling Stones, "Miss You", off their Chart Topping album "Some Girls". The Harmonica playing on that song, also one of my favorite parts of the song, was courtesy of Sugar Blue, "who according to Ronnie Wood, was found while busking on the streets of Paris." Now 34 years later, I once again have the renewed excitement of listening to "Miss You", this time courtesy of Sugar Blue's sweet new double album release, "Raw Sugar" Live.

Double Live albums have been a favorite of mine since hearing Grand Funk Railroad's 1970 "Live Album", and then later on in the 70's receiving Peter Frampton's "Frampton Comes Alive", for my birthday in 1976. I still have both those albums and still enjoy playing them on a regular basis. Now after listening to "Raw Sugar" Live, I got a pretty good idea that this one will also be played on a regular basis for many years to come, as well.

Sugar Blue has often been called the Jimi Hendrix of the Harmonica, and not long into "Raw Sugar" Live, you will certainly know why. Sugar Blue has played and recorded with many of the greats, including Roosevelt Sykes, Willie Dixon, Brownie McGhee, Victoria Spivey, Johnny Shines, Big Walter Horton, James Cotton, and Junior Wells, to name but a few. I was thoroughly amazed when I read his Bio and I invite all of you to also take a few moments to read it, as it is quite amazing.

"Raw Sugar" Live is Sugar Blue's 7th album, and was recorded during their 2011 US Tour. It consists of 13 Tracks of which 7 are originals either written or co-written by Sugar Blue, under the name he was born with, James Whiting. Sugar Blue was a name he decided to call himself after looking through a bunch of 78's that were discarded in a dumpster, from which one was called Sugar Blues by Sidney Bechet.

For the covers on "Raw Sugar" Live, Sugar Blue chose some dandies and included Mud Morganfield's "One More Mile", Willie Dixon's "Hoochie Coochie Man", Mel London's "Messin' With The Kid" a song first recorded by Junior Wells, and of course Mick Jagger & Keith Richards "Miss You", to name 4 of the covers.

As a double live album, "Raw Sugar" Live clocks in at over 2 hours, which when you consider the fact that it only contains 13 Tracks, you are guaranteed some really great long jamming style songs. For instance, there is Willie Dixon's "Hoochie Coochie Man", a song traditionally done in the 4 minute range, but on this album it clocks in at an epic 14:19. Stretching out these great tunes, allows for 2 things to happen, with the first being that it really allows one to get grooving in a song, which for short more conventional songs sometimes end before you know it. The second thing is that extended play means extended time for the other musicians to get a chance to really show there stuff which, for "Raw Sugar" Live, featured Rico McFarland (Guitar), James Knowles (Drums), Haria Lantieri (Bass), and Damiano Della Torre (Keyboards). Haria Lantieri also co-wrote several songs with Sugar Blue on this album.

I found "Raw Sugar" Live to be just an absolutely great and fun listen from start to finish. It has everything you could want from a double live album, great music, a great live feel like you are right there in the audience, and great humorous banter with the audience at the beginning of most of the Tracks.

I am really super grateful for Sugar Blue tracking me down and sending me this treasure.

Fans of really great live albums, especially those featuring stellar Harp playing, are really going to love "Raw Sugar" Live.

Highly Recommended and Thoroughly Enjoyed... ~Review by John Vermilyea (Blues Underground Network)
