Mac McAnally's latest solo album, sung, performed and produced by the much beloved session ace. All but one of its songs were written by McAnally, either on his own or with illustrious co-writers including Jimmy Buffett, Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown, Sonny Landreth, Chris Stapleton, Al Anderson, and others. Working with an all-star assembly of friends and studio colleagues, McAnally achieves a rare blend of deep soul and polished technique on each track.

The superlative term "musician's musician" is bandied around often. But few folks deserve that level of praise like Mac McAnally. The Mississippi raised Alabama native who cut his teeth as a Muscle Shoals session wiz before striking out on his own has won the past five consecutive Musician of the Year awards from the Country Music Association (he is nominated again this year). Kenny Chesney is among the country stars who regularly turn to McAnally's songs when constructing his albums, and he has been a regular collaborator of Jimmy Buffett - as well as a member of his all-star Coral Reefer Band - for decades.

That's all no fluke for an artist who can deftly master just about any style and whose songwriting is both deeply personal, yet remarkably - and intimately - relatable. On his new album, "AKA Nobody," longtime fans will find one of the fullest expressions of McAnally's talents, while folks who have crossed his path via one of his many collaborative projects will experience the depth of a chameleonic performer who defies the old "jack of all trades is a master of none" mantra.

There's the playful gypsy swing of "Zanzibar," the southern soul of "Mississippi On My Mind," the strutting piano rock of "Place Where You Belong" and the bluegrass and zydeco-fueled "Proud to be Alive." Each track is filled with the rich characters and personal reflections that have long marked MacAnally's songwriting, but none are as poignant as "With a Straight Face." In a lush melody reminiscent of ELO or Paul McCartney's post-Beatles work, MacAnally weaves the plight of two gay children struggling with families that just don't understand. The story is vibrant, stark, engaging and thought-provoking. The kind of work you get from a musician's musician.
