Lancashire-based singer-songwriter Susie Jones has released her second full length album, ‘Shake Away The Devil’, on Rubi Records. The album sees a departure from her acoustic folk beginnings and brings forward a heavier, full textured sound which features all self-penned songs for the first time. The album, which was recorded over the length of 12 months, is the result of a personal healing process of an artist coming of age. This new record sees her back working with old faces; engineered by her bassist Dave Parker and Gary Hall and features Mark Whiteside on drums. It also marks the arrival of new faces including guitarist Matt Wells and Andrew Glassford who mixed and mastered the record. ‘Shake Away The Devil’ was produced by long-time collaborator Rob Kentell at Sunnybank Studios and the Voodoo Rooms. This record presents a writer at her most exposed and honest, a singer whose voice touches the soul of the listener.

The record opens with the melancholic, despair filled “Walk Outside”. Jones’ vocals are haunting and evoke despair, as she spins a tale of hurting and coping with loss and heartbreak. “Road Grows Dim” is another melancholic number, about dying dreams and change. “Slips Away” features production that has a faster beat/pace to it, with a folk and Celtic feel to it. The track keeps the melancholic theme going, while it addresses how quickly things like time, perspective, and dreams can slip away. It’s a catchy song in its own way and intriguing. The track is definitely a standout on the record. Another Folk/Celtic flavored track is the haunting “Praying”, another standout. Jones sums up the main message of the song with the verse, “I’m always praying for a little more time”.

“Endless Story” features a more upbeat tempo, a message of hope and a press-on attitude. Another track that features a faster tempo is “Indiana”. The track sees Jones singing an ode to the state of Indiana. “Kicking Up Dust” features an organ, giving the track a churchy, organic feel to it. Like the majority of the record, this track has a melancholic mood, boasting a sense of regret and loss. “Chances We Take” carries on the melancholic mood that is infused in the whole record, talking about the chances you take in life and how some pay off and others don’t.

Jones closes the album with the appropriate “In The End”, a stripped down, beautiful track. This song is definitely a vocal performance track, highlighting Jones’ voice perfectly and showing off her true talent. ‘Shake Away The Devil’ is an organic, textured album unencumbered by loud, overdone production. It’s truly a deep, emotional album; Jones isn’t afraid to tackle to tougher, darker emotions. I would recommend this record to anyone looking for a great Americana/Roots record.
