“Birthright” couldn’t be a more auspicious debut for Seattle blues-rock trio Stubborn Son, which formed just over a year ago.

Produced, engineered, mixed and mastered at Seattle’s Jupiter Studios by Martin Feveyear — who has worked with Duff McKagan’s Loaded, Queens of the Stone Age, Mudhoney, Mark Lanegan and Kings of Leon — the album crackles with fiery emotion and energy.

With its raw and rootsy blend of blues, rock and soul, “Birthright” recalls the music of such artists as the Black Keys, Jack White and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. “Birthright” was recorded with few overdubs on a vintage analog console.

Stubborn Son includes Garrett Lamp (guitar, lead vocals), Andrew Knapp (bass, vocals) and Blair Daly (drums, vocals). Each member plays a key role in the band’s urgent, blues-driven sound, though Lamp’s soulful vocals and life-affirming lyrics add a dose of gritty poetry.

Getting off to a roaring start with “The Broken Heart Proof,” “Birthright” features 10 songs that sound as if they were recorded by a veteran trio rather than a less-than-2-year-old band. “Thick As Blood” features swampy slide guitar, and the nearly six-minute-long “Voices” anchors the album with a soul-searching, hard-rocking exploration of lust and love. Less interesting is the somewhat humdrum “Fall for This.” ~By Gene Stout
