This is a sensational collection of songs. Each title adds something special to this musical journey. Opening up with Afro-Blue, you learn right away that this isn't going to be a sleepy, slow album. Truly wonderful and rich vocals in this rendition by Abbey Lincoln. Ahmad Jamal's "Bogota" also features a live, energetic vibe with excellent piano work and a brilliant arrangement. Dorothy Ashby's "Taboo" has very nice flute and harp (Ashby) work with the flute being a welcome touch. My other favorites included here were Roy Haynes "Modette" and definitely George Gruntz "Spanish Castles". "Modette", really capturing the essence of the album, features Frank Strozier on flute while Roy's exceptional percussion play is never overwhelming. Finally with "Spanish Castles", you really feel as though you're being transplanted to a pleasant place. With George's piano and great harmony between soprano & alto, it was really a wonderfully arranged and produced song.(By bordersj)
