Hello. I’m Roy Davis. This is the newest album I’ve created, it’s called The Awakening. It was recorded in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, in June of 2014. June is a beautiful time to be in Maine by the ocean. I now live here in Austin, Texas. Which is beautiful pretty much all of the time. I have very little to complain about, and yet I can still find a way, sometimes.

The sounds on this record are a combination of the string band/bluegrass sound of my two recent previous records (as The Coloradas) and the blues, folk and indie rock that I grew up listening to. I tried my best to surround myself with inspiring musicians who are capable of anything, but also understand nothingness.

For me, whether I’m listening to music or playing it, the songs are always the most important thing. This album came together during a time I spent at a rented studio space in Liberty, Maine. I had just gotten back from a three week tour in Europe, and I was feeling misunderstood in a very literal way. Anxious to get back to performing for audiences with a context for American roots music, I set to work for a month or so, writing songs and reading and taking breaks to shovel snow. The songs ended up being mostly story songs, as opposed to autobiographical. Each story, whether told as a first person narrative or through characters, turned into a prophetic sketch of what my (or anyone’s) life could turn into with a wrong turn or a right turn, or with good luck or bad luck.

I hope you enjoy the music, and appreciate you taking the time to give it a listen. I wish you a life full of meaning and good humor. Cheers,

Roy Davis
