24-track anthology of hard-to-find '60s Chicago blues and R&B, recorded for small independent companies whose distribution was inefficient: Firma, Formal, Derby, A-1 Dud, USA, Friendly Five, Fay, Dawn's or Age. The local sales were good an d the majority of the selected artists had talent, and many have also pursued a more brilliant career as published by larger companies. It's great to find the singer and guitarist William "Lefty" Bates on "Ninety Days" and an instrumental titled "Rock Alley". But there's also saxophonist A.C. Reed on six tracks including "Come On Home" (1961) with Reggie Boyd (guitar), Ray Charles Little (organ), Earnest Johnson (bass) and Billy Stepney (drums) and "My Baby Is Fine" (1966) with Matt Murphy (guitar ), Lafayette Leake (organ), among others.
We can also hear Freddy Young in 1964 with Eddie Taylor (guitar), Lafayette Leake (organ) and Andrew McMahon (bass), or Chicago Piano C Red (James Wheeler !!) with "Miss Annie Lou", and James "JL" Smith with two titles with Johnny 'Twist' Williams (guitar) and John Littlejohn (guitar), Walter Horton (harmonica), Abb Locke (tenor saxophone), Calvin Jones (bass) and Bill Warren (drums), plus Bobby Davis (vocals, organ) with "Twist" Williams (guitar) and Loretta Taylor (drums) in Sweet Song. In short, an anthology recommended without reservation, despite some weaker tracks, often with vocals.
