Self-described hell-billy band Moonshine Sorrow of Waterloo is releasing its second album in as many years.

The band blends raunchy, whiskey-fueled country and blues rock for high energy live shows. The group has also stayed busy going to the studio to record "Cryin' Shame" which they'll officially release Friday at Spicoli's Grill.

They're joined by the eNablers, Tyler Gregory and Dan Blair. Doors open at 6 p.m. Cover is $5. The band will be tapping a free keg of beer for guests at 9 p.m.

Also Friday, Long Island singer-songwriter Mikey Wax plays a Cedar Valley House Concerts show.

Wax's single, "In Case I Go Again," from his debut album "Change Again," was featured on the CBS Television series "Ghost Whisperer" and on NBC coverage of the 2012 Summer Olympics. He is joined by singer songwriter Alexis Keegan.

Doors to the show open at 6:15 p.m. with suggested $15 donation to the artists. Visit Cedar Valley House Concert's Facebook page to RSVP and for more information.

At Octopus College Hill Friday, Cedar Falls rock group Peas and Carrot is playing along with Iowa City bands Crystal City and The Sapwoods and Cedar Rapids rock trio Saw the Seahorse. That show begins at 9 p.m.

The show is an unofficial lead-up to Peas and Carrot's appearance representing the Cedar Valley at the 10th annual Des Moines Music Coalition's Gross Domestic Product festival on Saturday.

Peas and Carrot released a 5-track EP, "Big Girl Shoes," at the end of October.

Lead singer Audrey Robinson has a fantastic and unique voice, smooth and slightly smoky and without pretense. The lyrics she writes come from experience. Like the best songwriters, her honesty is part of her appeal.

Robinson said that comes from her experience when she left Iowa to live in Wyoming for a couple of years. After her job at Yellowstone Park fell through and the clutch on her truck fell apart, she found herself tapped out, homeless. She found work but lived in a tent at Curtis Canyon for a couple months.

“I guess it made me figure out I know less than I thought I did,” she said. “That was probably the most desperate I felt in my life.”
