Kansas native Sky Smeed collaborated with Truckstop Honeymoon’s Mike & Katie West to record his fifth studio album, Drive All Night (street date: March 24, 2015). The collaboration has proven to be a poignant, foot-stomping good time sprinkled with sentimental moments and allusions to not-so-illegal smiles.
The album, written by Smeed over the last two years, walks right into the meaty march that is “Smoke ‘n Spice”. An ode to one of his favorite cookbooks, the opener riffs on finding true love through cuisine; a foodie attraction, or as Sky calls it: “Hungry white male seeks smoke pit queen that can cook that barbecue.” The carnivorous, comedic masterpiece is only the beginning.
In “Blue Highways”, Smeed laments taking the traveling troubadour show to barrooms and cafés of Middle America. “I Don’t Know What to Do” is a vivid story of surviving the pangs of adulthood and growing old, all the while learning to embrace newfound loneliness and humanity.
“Drive All Night” and “Long Way Down the Road” perfectly encapsulate the push and pull that is life on the road. The drive – both figuratively and literally – of what it feels like to yearn for the return home as soon as humanly possible, while trying to enjoy the scents and subtle sounds that are found in the unfamiliar surroundings common in travel are themed in the title cut, while the latter ‘Long Way Down the Road” slowly steps away from the situation at hand.
It’s hard to tell where the album climaxes, but it’s for certain that the cannabis-fueled crowd favorite “Talkin’ Medical Marijuana Blues” is a definitive high point on the album, describing one man’s journey from Ohio to Colorado for a second opinion for such symptoms of fatigue, ‘chronic’ pain, and cotton mouth. Now paging Dr. Kind…
Smeed beautifully explores new territory with the album’s last two cuts: the stadium-sized Woody Guthrie-flavored anthem “This Land”, and the 1950s-feeling R&B ballad “Tell Me Now”, which begs you to get it all off your chest before you close that door.
The album was largely tracked live at the West’s studio in Lawrence, Kan. Other musicians contributing to Drive All Night include percussionist Colin Mahoney, vocalists Ann Dean and Danny McGaw, and Bradford Hoopes on Hammond B3 organ.
