Anyone who has not heard Rick Fines perform live is in for a real musical treat.
He is a veteran guitarist with a rich, unique voice who also happens to write incredible lyrics.
Those who have heard Fines in the past will be pleased to know that he will perform his blues repertoire on Jan. 17 at the intimate venue upstairs at Harden and Huyse Chocolates, now known as The Loft, at 201 Division St., Cobourg.
Half of the proceeds will be donated to assist Northumberland United Way’s efforts to raise the lofty goal of $1 million.
Fines is a veteran of the blues and folk-music circuit. He has impressed audiences with his blues, folk and slide-guitar work for 24 years. His influences include Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy and the Rolling Stones.
He has won Maple Blues Awards twice for Songwriter Of The Year and Acoustic Act Of The Year. Maple Blues Awards promote the blues throughout Canada and recognize top performers and songwriters under a number of different categories. He has been nominated eight additional times.
Riley Wants His Life Back was one of his most successful hits when it won first place in the 2003 International Songwriting Competition in the Blues category with the legendary B.B. King as one of the judges.
For 15 years, Fines played with Jackson Delta and garnered Juno and Handy awards. He has performed as a duo with Suzie Vinnick. Over the years he has played with blues piano player Pinetop Perkins, guitarist Jimmy Bowskill, singer Colleen Patterson, master harmonica player Carlos del Junco, and folk star Penny Lang.
Fines has toured across Canada, from Newfoundland to B.C. and up to the Arctic, during the last year. Past tours have included concerts throughout France and Great Britain.
Fines’s latest album, Driving Home, has just been released. All of the songs are original, and showcase his knack for strong lyrical content.
