A couple of years ago, Bleu Rascals had to change their name so as not to infringe on another blues band based in Baguio. It didn’t hurt the aspiring trio any as they moved on to rave performances at the Roadhouse on MOA Grounds, and conquering breakthroughs at the 2012 International Blues Festival in Memphis USA and the 2013 Cotai Jazz Blues Festival in Macau.

All that ground-breaking work comes down to their soon-to-be released debut, "Badge of Courage." The unassuming album title belies the hard work and painstaking inspiration that the trio of Paul Marney, John Jayson and Oliver invested on the album.

The group built their reputation on guitarist Paul Marney’s breath-taking live fretwork founded on the legacy of Steve Ray Vaughn and Jimi Hendrix, among others. Standing on those solid shoulders, Paul, John and Oliver chisel their own OPM sound that echoes US-minted (Texas) blues as much as the last 40 years of Pinoy rock. More of the richly aromatic local content really, because Paul sings with the unusual Pinoy twang that’s essentially his own.

The album kicks off with the guitar rumble of “Roller Coaster” about “a train on fire down the river” and grows in strength in psychedelic fireworks. The title track is another roaring blues rocker where Paul poses the album’s theme: To show what they’ve got. He would flesh out the idea in songs of struggles and distress while growing up and in finding empowerment in his guitar to finally put his name on the map. Love songs especially the grinding funk of “Got My Eyes on You” and some political snipes in “Brownman’s Blues” round out the band’s collective effort to earn their stripes beyond the blues community.

It’s one of the most awaited debuts of 2015 and Bleu Rascals has delivered on the promise, in spades..
