As first revealed in their interview with The Electricity Club in January 2014, MARSHEAUX are covering the entire of DEPECHE MODE’s ‘A Broken Frame’ for a future album release on Undo Records. A busman’s holiday away from the songwriting process can be good for the creative spark; after all, the medium of interpretation has been an artistic adventure for many in the past including BRYAN FERRY, DAVID BOWIE, SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES, ERASURE, MIDGE URE and BEF. But, the difference here is that MARSHEAUX are covering an entire album concept, rather than a collection of songs.

MARSHEAUX have actually pulled off a smart move by reinterpreting ‘A Broken Frame’, which they feel is the DEPECHE MODE album closest to their own sonic character. Very much a transitional record, it is not considered to be among DEPECHE MODE’s best. However, this therefore leaves songs such as ‘My Secret Garden’, ‘The Sun & The Rainfall’, and ‘Shouldn’t Have Done That’ much more open to new treatments and arrangements. The project could also be obliquely viewed as Marianthi Melitsi and Sophie Sarigiannidou’s commentary on the recent economic situation in Greece.

MARSHEAUX previously covered ‘New Life’ for the ‘Around The World & Back: A Greek Tribute To Depeche Mode’ album back in 2005 while they did also a brilliant remix of ‘A Pain That I’m Used To’. Marianthi and Sophie met through their local DM Hysterika fan club, so are naturally approaching ‘A Broken Frame’ in a respectful and intuitive manner as fans of the Basildon Boys.

MARSHEAUX_broken-frameThe first track snippet to be unveiled was ‘Monument’ which was given an interesting twist by borrowing the bassline from latter day DM B-side ‘Painkiller’. Of the other tasters so far, ‘The Sun & The Rainfall’ and ‘My Secret Garden’ both sound ideally suited to wispy female vocals while the still-to-be-publically aired ‘Nothing To Fear’ has been beefed up as an optimistic Hellectro statement to signify the nation’s return from austerity. ‘A Broken Frame’ could be very interesting for MARSHEAUX to perform live…
