Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver have been making great bluegrass music for 35 years. And the Bluegrass Hall of Famer isn't showing any signs of slowing down. Next week, his third project in nine months, In Session, will be released on Mountain Home Records.

The title is a nod to Doyle’s band, known among players as “The School of Bluegrass.” Dozens of top bluegrass artists have gone through the ranks of the Quicksilver institution. When your band’s alumni include names such as Russell Moore, Jamie Dailey, Steve Gulley, Shawn Lane, Jim Mills, Lou Reid, Terry Baucom, and more, “The School of Bluegrass” seems a more than appropriate nickname. The 2015 lineup of Quicksilver includes Dustin Pyrtle (guitar), Eli Johnston (bass), Joe Dean (banjo), Josh Swift (dobro) and Stephen Burwell (fiddle).

The album’s lead single, “Roll Big River” is already climbing bluegrass radio charts across the country. The song moves along with the power of a roaring river, winding around the last bend towards home. A great driving bluegrass song, it is marked by the soaring Quicksilver harmonies which we have all come to expect. We caught up with Doyle to learn a little more about the song:

“‘Roll Big River’ was written by my guitar player, Dustin Pyrtle, and my bass player, Eli Johnston. I think it’s the perfect opener for the album. It has all of the elements I look for in a bluegrass song: hard-driving, good lyrics, and of course, good harmony. It’ll put a little get-up in your go!”

In Session will be released January 20. To celebrate, the band will be appearing on Music City Roots at The Factory in Franklin, TN. If you are unable to be among the lucky few in the audience, you can view the show online at Doyle and the boys will appear alongside The Malpass Brothers, Kristin Andreassen, Chip Taylor and the show’s host, Jim Lauderdale.
