When drummer John Rossillon called me about a year ago and asked if I wanted to audition for a band called the Mighty Neptunes, I never dreamed it would evolve into this. John was an old buddy of mine from the days when we played the US Navy bars in Alameda, California, and I’ve always had a lot of respect for him. I quickly developed the same for his lead guitarist, Kevin Kearney, a guy who’s shared a stage with John Lee Hooker. Very quickly a winning team came together when Steve Berk agreed to fill in on keyboards. Steve is a fixture in the Bay Area music scene, having recorded and performed with legendary outfits like Journey and Jackson Browne. And then Ann Marie Adrain came along and added the flavor of her driving bass guitar and smokey vocals. That’s when these songs started pouring out like wine.

American Blue is a term we came up with even before I wrote a song of that name. A lot of our favorite bands were playing a style of music known as Americana, and our stuff fits loosely into that category. But we tend more to the blues end of the spectrum of American music. Even so, you’ll hear a pretty wide range of genres here. “Mexican Tele,” named after one of my guitars, is a country song with a Latin lilt to it, while the title track itself is pure country rock. “A Woman in Vain” is straight blues. “In a Wistful Mood” and “Ain’t Life Funny That Way” sound like jazz standards. You’ll also find some New Orleans, a bit of Memphis, even some Oakland funk. That’s what we like playing. That’s what we like listening to. We hope you will too.
