Those intimate, mostly acoustic blueprints have been gently fleshed out yet not smothered, thanks to the keen ears of revered producer Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo, Lambchop). “Known Ya” is a bittersweet tale of a futile romance, and like several songs on the album, walks a fine line between melancholia and uplift. My favorite track from the demos, “Don’t Go Mad,” sounds even fuller now, a simple yet powerful primer on coping with the roller coaster of life. Smolderoldingpictureaid features an exceptional backing band — guitarists Audley Freed and David Steele, drummer Keith Brogdon, keyboardist John Lancaster and bassist Billy Mercer — but the musicians never get in the way Embry’s warm vocal delivery and tasteful tenor guitar work, which provides a subtle but welcome change from the standard acoustic guitar strumming of typical songwriter fare. Highly recommended, particularly if you’re a fan of Ron Sexsmith. JACK SILVERMAN Nashville Scene
