This is a fun album and one that even for someone as musically challenged as me, it makes you want to pick up the nearest two objects and bash them together along with the beat. In my case it’s two cats, so I chose a mug and a can. It made a right old noise, but hey as I said, this is a fun album that invites you to get stuck in.

Meade covers a variety of genres including boogie-woogie, bluegrass, honky-tonk and country blues and he describes it as “Something for those who have lived a little”.

Upon first listen, this album sounds pretty much of a muchness, with a lot of the tracks all seemingly to be cut from the same cloth, and a couple of tracks being indistinguishable from each other, particularly the first two tracks ‘Maggie Blue’ and ‘What You Waiting For’.

But whilst there is an air of familiarity amongst a lot of these tracks, I reckon a number of the subtleties and differences within the differing genres are lost on my untrained ears. Most of the tracks on this album are fairly frantic but ‘Hard To Hear’ is a beautiful love song that takes me back to Gram Parsons’ “Grievous Angel” days.

‘Homegrown Hank’ is about........well if you need me to tell you who it is, then you have no right visiting this website. And if you’re a newbie to all this, then type “Hank” into the search engine of your choice and he’ll be first on the list of results.

But the toe tappingness of ‘Long Way To Fall’, the jingly ‘If It’s Not Your Fault (I Guess It’s Mine)’ and ‘Lay It Down’ indicate that this is music that needs to be heard in a juke joint to fully appreciate it.
