Who is Joe Kelly?

Joe Kelly is an award winning journalist who has spent several years writing for The Australian newspaper, including four in the Canberra press gallery. He has served as the national daily's online political reporter and has covered two federal election campaigns, including as a lead political writer. Joe currently writes part time on business issues and lives in the Sydney area while he takes one year off to pursue his music. He will be returning to the Canberra press gallery next year.

Joe is a director of AlphaCrucis Arts and is an established composer having written the music for the AWGIE award winning musical, Shakespearean Idol. He has collaborated with Melvyn Morrow, a co-writer of the Shout and Dusty musicals, and is close to finishing the composition of his first full-cast musical "Faust" with co-writer Stephen Cosgrove.

Formally he was the frontman for the Sydney based rock act, The Religion. The Religion will have two "prog rock" albums available on-line by the end of 2014. Joe's first solo record, Hard Love & Tender Violence, will also be available on iTunes soon.

This website features Joe's solo music including the tracks off his debut record. It also contains news of his upcoming gigs, videos and photographs. This site also allows you to access Joe's journalism as he seeks to establish himself across both mediums.

While Joe's journalism has been focused on Australian politics, his music is very different and predominantly character driven. His songs detail the stories of those who have walked the darker and more obscure paths in life. They explore alternative and challenging perspectives on the world while delving deep into the minds of individuals who do not fit easily into today's society.

His debut record Hard Love & Tender Violence is now available on iTunes. It contains 16 strangely uplifting, part demented, rage-fuelled, alcohol soaked tracks. The album explores the themes of hard living, love, tenderness and violence -- and it doesn't hold back.

Lyrically, it will prove challenging to some listeners as it deals realistically and truthfully with friendship, alcoholism, abuse, murder, lust, regret, poverty and crime. At the same time, it also features a number of care-free old fashioned rock numbers.

Joe is also open to taking commissions. A talented piano player, he has composed a number of instrumental pieces and songs for successful Australian productions.
