With a voice that channels the haunting, ethereal tone of Emmylou Harris as much as the ceiling-free range of Carrie Underwood, it's hard to believe Caitlyn Smith has spent most of her Nashville days behind-the-scenes. The Minnesota native has cut her country teeth inside Music Row's many songwriting rooms, penning tunes for the likes of Lady Antebellum, Jason Aldean, Rascal Flatts, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, among others. But she's saved some of the literally hundreds of songs she's written for herself, releasing a few indie records over recent years and plotting what is poised to be her highest profile project to date, the new EP Everything to You, due October 28th.

"So much of who I am as an artist has to do with the fact that I'm constantly writing and creating new music. I'm a writer down to my bones," Smith, who co-wrote all songs on the EP, tells Rolling Stone Country.

Everything to You has a mix of intoxicating ballads ("Novocaine"), feel-good anthems ("Grown Woman") and in-your-face breakup songs ("Wasting All These Tears," also cut and released as a single by Voice winner, Cassadee Pope). Its title track, co-written with powerhouse tunesmiths Lori McKenna and Liz Rose, is perhaps the most personal on the collection.

"I had my husband in mind," Smith says of the songwriting session for "Everything to You." "Every line in the song is me to a T — from 'hold my own with a beer or two, in a cotton dress and high heel shoes,' to 'Saturday night and a Bible verse or two.'"
