Eddie Lang, George Van Eps, Johnny St. Cyr… thanks to them, the rustic banjo gave way to the guitar, at the time relegated to the stingy repertoire of a classical past. From the Thirties until just after the war, a squad of pioneers took to the task of turning the acoustic guitar, whose disposition made it unlikely to rival with the brass, into a jazz instrument: some of them favoured chording, others single-note playing, and still others changed their tuning to increase their range. Jazz guitar was possible after all, and electric plugs hadn’t yet been invented!
