1. Aidan Baker / thisquietarmy - Hypnodrone Ensemble 41:14

Experimental musicians Thisquietarmy’s Eric Quach and Nadja’s Aidan Baker have teamed up for a new collaborative record on ConSouling Sounds titled Hypnodrone Ensemble. This is not a split, but a total collaboration between both bands on one single track that lasts about 45 minutes and it’s like a river that takes the listeners and drag them into a flow of sounds that continuously changes its shape. It curses you and it doesn’t let you to go away.

Drone explorer and innovative guitarist Aidan Baker comes from Toronto, Canada, is quite famous through Nadja that’s actually one of the best bands in the world that keeps on experimenting and sound researching. Eric Quach comes from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and he is famous thanks to the experimental guitar-based project thisquietarmy. There’s no doubt that the two musicians have a lot in common and this collaboration is not surprising. To be honest they have collaborated together on several occasions in the past but now they have joined forces to create a really awesome album. Felipe Salazar (Caudal, Muerte En Pereira), Jérémie Mortier (Alice in the Cities, Lady Shot from a Tree), and Dave Dunnett (Man Meets Bear) joined the duo and their contribution is stellar: just think of the spacey and atmospheric guitar drones that characterize Hypnodrone Ensemble.

Hypnodrone Ensemble starts softly as the best drone tradition requires an the dark sound lulls you till the seventh minute when the rhythm changes and an exciting polyrhythmic drive will wrap you completely for about 10 minutes. It’s a kind of cage of sounds that resonate form everywhere and the mix of drone, space and prog rock is really a work of art. The three drummers here give proof of their talent. You can feel the strength of the river and its impetus becomes sound.
It takes a new direction again and the atmospheric guitar drones of Aidan and Eric center the stage but the drums are there giving to the composition a pursuing rhythm. The music here is both ambient and heavy, is spacey and this complexity demonstrate the ability of the band. Hypnodrone Ensemble is technically perfect and musically overwhelming, sometimes overwhelming, other times distressing. It’s up to you and mainly to your mood but this sound has the power to change it. It makes me dance, it make seat and just listen to it, it makes me feel like if I were in deserted roads in the middle of nowhere.

The rhythm builds up again: the river is flowing fast again crossing expansive sonic landscapes.

Hypnodrone Ensemble is atmospheric and will certainly conquer from the very first note. It has a lack of profundity though and if there were deep moments this already impressive album would be stellar.
