Taylor's Cooke-produced pop singles, including 'Rome Wasn't Built In A Day' and 'Dance What You Wanna', were only minor hits, as were such blues sides as 'Run But You Can't Hide' and Ί Need Lots of Love'. But during that same period, another singer, Little Johnny Taylor (whose influences were Little Willie John and Ted Taylor), scored a No 1 black chart hit with a blues titled 'Part Time Love'. Johnnie then began including Little Johnny's 'Part Time Love' in his club act, thus causing many fans to become quite confused. Five years later, Johnnie recorded his own, very different version of the song.

Following Cooke's tragic death in 1964, Johpnie Taylor signed with Stax Records. As he had at Sar and Derby, Taylor recorded a variety of material for the Memphis company, including the hard-punching 'Toe Hold' (later a hit for Wilson Pickett) and the lilting, Cooke- influenced 'You Can't Get Away From It'. Yet before his huge crossover success in 1968 with 'Who's Makin' Love' (a No 5 pop chart hit, No 1 R&B), it was Taylor's slow blues for Stax that were most successful, especially such 'Part Time Love'-inspired odes about infidelity as 'I've Got To Love Somebody's Baby' and 'Somebody's Sleeping In My Bed'. Anchoring his intense vocals to the tight, slow- dragging accompaniment of the Stax house band - guitarist Steve Cropper, keyboardists Isaac Hayes and Booker Τ Jones, bassist Duck Dunn, drummer Al Jackson Jr and the Mar-Keys horn section - Taylor brought a decidedly modern twist to the blues with those two blues hits and such others as 'Little Bluebird' (later covered successfully at Stax by Little Milton), Ί Had A Dream', and 'Outside Love'. Taylor's Stax blues, as well as those made for the label by Albert King during the same period, had a profound impact on shaping the future course of blues music.

The best of Taylor's pre- 'Who's Makin' Love' Stax blues and soul singles,.previously collected on the now-rare "Rare Stamps", is at long last reissued on "Little Bluebird", along with his three stirring live performance cuts from the also- out-of-print "Wattstax 2" LP. He was downplaying his "Blues Wailer" image by the time that marathon August 20, 1972 Los Angeles Coliseum concert was recorded and filmed, yet he kept at least a toehold on the blues with his gripping rendition of 'Stop Dogging Me'.
The innovatory 1968 album "Raw Blues" contains some of Taylor's finest soul blues work, including his version of 'Part Time Love' and the emotive 'Hello Sundown'.

The phenomenal success of his 1976 CBS single, 'Disco Lady' (No 1 pop in the US), led Taylor to play down the blues even more in his repertoire, but on his recent albums for the Malaco label, he's been wailing a blues or two again. "I think the blues", he said recently, "is always a part of this music".
