In one of the most irritating ploys pulled by a record company, Music Merchant split up the superb Parliament anthology First Thangs (which compiles the tracks recorded for the band's first album, Osmium, in 1970) into two CDs: Tamurinillis and George Clinton With Parliament. Tamurinillis is especially irksome; even though the remaining tracks would have been long enough for a separate disc, the label felt the need to omit "Unfinished Instrumental" and pad the disc with completely unrelated tracks by a modern funk band. These tracks are especially egregious because they feature some of the most mediocre, forgettable rapping in recent memory. The original P-Funk music preserved here is definitely worth hearing, since Parliament/Funkadelic was just discovering a fertile fusion of hard rock energy and funk rhythms. Alternate takes of later Funkadelic classics "Loose Booty" and "Red Hot Momma" confirm the band's growing talent at defining a whole new sound. The compilers did manage to uncover a previously unreleased track, "Eddie's Home: There's a Chariot Coming," which features some superb guitar work from legendary guitarist Eddie Hazel. Still, the fact that one of First Thangs' tracks was omitted, and that the superfluous modern tracks are dumped indiscriminately within the haphazard sequencing, is immensely galling. Had the compilers simply reissued First Thangs, which, upon its release, was a rare, difficult-to-find collection, they could have saved P-Funk fans a lot of trouble. Ultimately, Tamurinillis is a frustrating package that could have been so much better.
