Rev. Gary Davis is long heralded for his driving renditions of a wide variety of gospel and blues-tinged spirituals. He has impacted many of the most revered troubadours of our time including Bob Dylan Dave Van Ronk, Townes Van Zandt, John Sebastian, The Great Dead and many others. He was born into a struggling family in South Carolina, the eldest of 8 children and, although blind from birth, the only one to survive into adulthood Largely self taught, Davis honed his skills playing in the streets for may years before being discovered; his recordings led to his performing throughout the U.S. and all over the world.

Louisiana Red was the last of the giants from the classic age of blues when the hurt pained more and music was one of the few means of escape from lives full of broken dreams. Lefty Dizz, his partner on one cut, was one of the best of the Chicago guitar players; here he helps Red thrash his way down some lonely railroad tracks and to escape the wrath of a wrong-headed woman. Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee also started on the street before becoming the quintessential blues duo in demand the world over.

George Higgs was born in a poor farming community in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. He was long known as the best of the local bluesmen, winning a number of Piedmont Blues Awards, and only towards the end of his life (he died in 2013) did he begin performing in Europe, receiving wider recognition.

Jemima James was rising rapidly in the late sixties along with her musical friends– Mike Bloomfield among them–until pregnancies and divorce interrupted her career. Now back on the scene you’ll hear how well she’s doing today in her deeply felt renditions of love and loss. Deneen McEachern, in contrast, began as the lead vocalist in her hometown church choir from an early age. It was her stunning appearance in the blues musical “Standing At Your Door,” that led to the production of her first CD. Then there are The Wooten Singers, a powerhouse gospel group from Philadelphia, one of the country’s great centers of gospel music.

With Rev. Gary Davis at the helm, the collection is nothing short of magical. It rises to heights seldom heard in these days of electronic stratagems. This is the real stuff, as good as it gets.

Previously unreleased tracks featuring the iconic Reverend Gary Davis at his riveting best. Davis, the wildest guitar wizard of them all, had a huge influence on the biggest names in music from Bob Dylan to the Grateful Dead.
A showcase for Rev. Davis pounding out new ground embellished between cuts by first releases of an amazing collection of other legendary artists such as Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee and Louisiana Red.
Also prominently featured are previously unreleased tracks by multiple Piedmont Blues winner George Higgs and veteran folk singer Jemima James singing songs of “loves lost, looked for, and longed for” (AllMusic) with a sense of authenticity that is striking.
