'...played with the utmost sophistication by Viktoria Mullova...' '...but what wins out here is Mullova's sheer dancing virtuosity in Tico tico and Brasileirinho these are as dazzling as the sights and sounds of Brazil.' --The Observer

'Mullova goes beyond musical boarders but never oversteps the bounds of good taste. The arrangements of the Brazilian classics are 'enchanting' and the CD feels like holiday music for balmy nights, cool drinks, a tropical greeting from Sugar Loaf Mountain...' --Fono Forum

One cynically suspects a World Cup impetus here but violinist Viktoria Mullova has a real love of Brazilian music. Records like this are often overlooked because they fall between genres, but with styles such as bossa nova and choro, both distinctively from Rio, these distinctions between classical and popular break down. This is music like a warm breeze with an easygoing lyricism at its heart. Her collaborators are husband and cellist Matthew Barley, percussionists Paul Clarvis and Luis Guello, and Brazilian guitarist Carioca Freitas. There s a gentle, bittersweet quality in the Tom Jobim tracks but a real energy in Brasileirinho, by choro composer Valdir Azevedo, in which Mullova s bow dances across the strings with a virtuosity and panache few could match. 4 STARS --Evening Standard
