Someone here had these former GPS stalwarts pegged as post-punk but listening to their new sophomore effort I'd reckon they were more in the vein of poppy mid-80s new wave ala early Wild Nothing by way of the Bunnymen (maybe as they are now, not prime era). This is soft-focus widescreen indie pop with yearning McCulloch-reverent vocals tinged with romance and regret, chiming treated guitars and big retro production on the drums. It's all very nicely played indeed with some undeniably accomplished, if not so memorable songs.

For instance the track 'Youth' is particularly sweet with prominent moody escalating bass, cute airy keys and a loosely draped dinky guitar motif. It builds into a nice steady heartfelt tune. My only complaint would be that the mid-pace epic vibe throughout is a little one dimensional but at their best they're easily as good as early British Sea Power who I've always thought to be rather overrated. By The Sea offer up that kind of safe but comforting nostalgia trip for old lovers of The Big Music.
