Back in the days when televisions were the size of your refrigerator instead of the size of your wallet, the folks at a world-renowned jam company invented a slogan we’ll paraphrase here: with a name like Mingo Fishtrap, it has to be good. Or, at least, interesting.

Mingo Fishtrap is the name of the band and with regard to their new album, On Time, it’s both good and interesting. It’s a big, old 12-song bellyful of Memphis soul crosshatched with New Orleans jazz and funk (with not a little bit of All-American jam band thrown in for spice, good measure and maybe a nod to those “jammy” people over at Schmuckers). Jazz purists will scoff – there are no Braxtonian charades or Powellian accoutrements here – but people who believe jazz and dancing should co-exist, like back in the days of Ellington, will certainly abide with Mingo.

The story of Mingo Fishtrap goes back a few years to Bruce Hall – a dormitory, not a person – that sits on the campus of the University of North Texas. Long a fine institution of excellent musical reputation, North Texas had on its roster one Roger Blevins, Jr., a Mississippi-born singer and guitarist who’d cut his teeth on soul songs he’d heard his Daddy’s band play, along with a healthy dose of Gospel courtesy of the Chaplin at the local Air Force base. Hungering for a taste of musical home cooking, Blevins, JR. enlisted a crew of cats from the college to jam on some old soul songs to break up the usual rigors of solfeggio classes and music theory tests. In his words “it just took off and we went for it.”

Now eight men strong – including his Daddy, Louis Blevins, Sr. – Mingo Fishtrap has taken their operation on the road in support of artists like Sting, played at places like the Rochester Jazz Festival and now, with the release of On Time, have dropped a quartet of records.

On Time opens with the “End Of The World,” a deliciously groovy number that alternates between Motown funk and straight ahead rock and roll, all while Belvins, Jr. poses the question: “would you love like it’s the end of the world.” New Orleans jazz is at the heart of its successor, as Blevins, Jr. bellies up to the groove for a nip off that magic “Mason Jar.” Drawing from the jazz influenced legacy of Richie Havens and his contemporary, Ben Harper, “Things Ain’t What They Was” digs deep into a funky groove and offers Blevins, Jr. an opportunity to get “his John Scofield on,” with a searing guitar solo that creases the edges of the CD as it twirls about your machine.

The Blevins family love of Gospel comes to the fore on “Movin’,” a hand-clapping, foot-stomping round of Hallelujah while “Silver Lining” leans more to the bluesy side of the jazz scale. Other highlights on the record include the title cut, a shot of 70s Chicago soul, steeped in the smell of a musty wood-paneled basement, “Have I,” another bit of New Orleans funk and the album’s closer, “Fireproof,” a ballad that features vocal assistance from soul singer Treson Scipio.

“We’re not trying to play music just for musicians,” says Blevins, Jr. “You can listen to a great orator speaking in a different language, and while you may not get all the details, you can still feel the passion if he really emotes. If you’re passionate about the idea of a tune, it’ll come across.” If passion alone were the cornerstone of defining jazz – and why should it be? – then Mingo Fishtrap is as jazz as it gets.
