Willis Earl Beal has announced that he is parting ways with his label, the XL Recordings imprint Hot Charity. This comes after releasing two full-length records with Hot Charity, 2012’s Acousmatic Sorcery and 2013’s Nobody Knows. Both were notably followed up earlier this year by two surprise, independent releases, A Place That Doesn’t Exist and Curious Cool.

In an interview with Under the Radar, Beal cites legal disputes, songwriting credits, and misappropriation of funds as some of reasons for his departure. He also said that he didn’t fully understand what he could or couldn’t do when he signed to the label and claimed, “All I saw was the good money I was being given.” As time went on, Beal says he realized that he already has what he needs with his wife and music and that he didn’t “need all that fucking money.”

He added, “What I needed was the attention by the record label and the support of the record label, but I think I should have been signed to a more substantial subsidiary within XL Records, because the subsidiary I signed to [Hot Charity] was an upstart. I was the flagship artist. And with respect to the people involved, I just don’t think that they were prepared — not only to deal with an artist but to deal with a human being.”

In the wake of this development, Beal has announced that he’ll self-release his next album, Experiments in Time, on August 8th. Describing it as a “lo-fi symphony”, Beal said it “sounds a bit scratchy, and the way I decided to sing sounds old-fashioned. I used this Casio synthesizer that gives it this retro-futuristic minimalist feel.”

He continued, “That’s why I decided to call it Experiments in Time, because it has this grey tint. I have synesthesia, so I see colors and shapes of sounds, and it felt very white, grey, and silver to me.”
