Baltimore, Maryland’s Bad Liquor Pond is not a new name to the heavy psych rock community, but it sure is a treat to hear them still cooking up some heady ear candy on their latest record, Blue Smoke Orange Sky, that was released this past January. This is the kind of album you want to listen to cranked way up. Yeah, I know: that’s every album, right? But it’s really the only way to have your ears capture everything that’s going on in Bad Liquor Pond’s own style of high quality wall-of-sound, tinged with precisely dialed amounts of psychedelia, americana, and garage rockness. I had to listen through the album a couple of times just to be sure, but I swore I could make out an organ coming through the sound in more and more of the songs, serving as a subtle, yet necessary anchor in their very full and colorful sound, usually joined with bass fat enough to feel, and tenor vocals that are fat and smoothed out with distortion and reverb. The garage energy fueling most of the album is supplied by the intelligent hits and fills of the drums complimenting the drive of the bass, working together to push the grooves forward, and at times, pulling them back.
