The Toronto outfit Gitar is noted for its kaleidoscopic blend of musical styles while remaining, in essence a four-piece indie rock group. Their commitment to writing songs and balancing the flavors of different genres and eras goes right back to their beginning, as a recording project between Mikhail Galkin and Tai Lee, who first played together back in high school days. By the time Gitar was conceived, Galkin had developed into an accomplished producer, releasing the critically acclaimed LP One Day on Tres Records, under the name DJ Alibi. Lee, lead guitarist of past raw Toronto acts The Nordiques and The Best, and Galkin envisioned a mix of hard, “boom bap” drums, evocative production elements and heavy guitars. Drummer Dan Rios lent his funky, jazz-inflected style to their live shows and studio work. The songs themselves flow from a mosaic of inspirations: The Clash, Tinariwen, Cypress Hill, Neil Young, Arab pop music, Link Wray, Tito Puente, as well as pop and folk music from Soviet states and the Balkans are all somehow present in the compositions of these young players. Now a four-piece, Gitar is poised to release their new LP Active Cultures on Piecelock70 in the summer of 2014. With songs touching on themes of love and loss to white collar crime and urban decay, it is a lush, energetic musical travelogue that may cause head nodding and free floating.
