Perhaps you don’t recognize the name “Lil Buck and the Topcats.” Bandleader Paul “Lil Buck” Sinegal played guitar with Clifton Chenier for years and is one of the greatest axe-slingers on the blues scene today. Speaking of wailin’ discs, collectively, this is the band responsible for the impossibly great, funky as all hell "Monkey In a Sack " and “ Cat Scream,” (also originally released on La Louisianne), which has lately been making all kinds of waves with funk, soul and hip-hop DJs the world over.

Not enough people know it, but Paul “Lil Buck” Sinegal (alternately spelled “Senegal” is one of Louisiana’s most versatile guitar players. With a career that has spanned five decades and produced hundreds of recordings, Lil’ Buck has garnered a reputation for mastering just about every musical style that’s come out of his native Louisiana. He assembled his first group, The Jive Five, in 1959, and the fifteen piece Top Cats were essentially a fraternal collection of R&B greats.

Allen Toussaint called Paul “Lil’ Buck” Sinegal the “Gentle Giant of Guitar.” Sinegal has played Jazz Fest every year since the 1970s, whether it was with his blues band or zydeco legends Clifton Chenier, Buckwheat Zydeco and Rockin’ Dopsie. He is officially scheduled for one Jazz Fest performance this year. Sinegal has reigned as the guitarist of choice for dozens of zydeco bands. According to the liner notes of his CD, Bad Situation, Sinegal is credited as a sideman on more than 300 recordings in each decade since the 1950s. Fourteen years with Chenier, as well as years with Katie Webster, Lazy Lester, Henry Gray and other blues artists, have allowed Sinegal to play thousands of concerts.
