Detroit was and still is a hotbed of American music. The city is known for producing some of music's greatest artists including Diana Ross and Jackie Wilson, to name but two. The label you'd most associate with Detroit? Motown, of course. One you might not is Anna Records but you should. The Detroit-based label was a precursor to Motown and was born of the same stock. Sisters Anna and Gwen Gordy, siblings of Motown founder Berry, founded the label in 1958 along with singersongwriter Billy Davis and, although it was only in existence for less than half a decade, it provided a platform for a number of artists, some of which would go on to sit among America's greatest. The Gordy family's legacy speaks for itself, but Anna is a lesserknown foundation on which one of the biggest dynasties in US music was built. This two-disc collection includes 50 building blocks of the Motown empire.
