Okay, I have to say, I'm a bit of a box set lover. They typiclly have extra and otherwise unavailable music, good booklets, rare photos, and often, but not always, state of the art sound. And, lately I have found that some sets can become somewhat hard to find after a while.
Anyway, this set is beautifully packaged, has some rare photos, great sound, and one -at the time,1997- unissued Mingus tune. I can't get into all the great players and all the different configurations we find them in here, it would take a long time to do that. Let's just say, everybody is represented here from the Original Dixieland 'jass' Band to Roy Hargroove (100 artists, 130 tunes from 80 years of RCA). This is a great find (if you can find it). I've done some searching and it is not getting any easier to find. Try not to go for the individual discs. Try to find this "collector's edition" (it has an extra disc and a booklet of extra and rare photos). This is a bit of a "sleeper," that is to say I'll bet you haven't heard much about it. I just took a shot and am very pleased with it.
