Grady Kelneck was almost born on the stage, his singer/drummer mother rushed right from a gig to the hospital in labour. Brought up in a show biz family, Grady spent his childhood and adolescence playing in a band with mother, father, and brother. One of his earliest musical memories is singing in front of 20,000 people for Toronto’s 150th birthday at City Hall. His grandfather is a musical legend in the Ontario north, Stompin Tom Connors even penning a song after him.
Over the years, Grady has played in a number of musical outfits, lending multiple instruments, vocals, and songwriting to the fold. As a founding member of indie rockers, The Parkas, dues were paid in cross-Canada tours, sharing the stage with acts such as Hot Hot Heat, The Dears, and The Constantines. The Parkas also performed at Toronto’s Canadian Music Week and NXNE, with the band winning the Steve’s Music Emerging Artist Award. Joining Toronto’s gypsy folk/jazz players The Strip was a new challenge for Grady, picking up the accordion and developing his keyboard chops. Playing mandolin and singing lead and harmony vocals with CHASLASKAKEVINGRADY has been another musical road taken as the group delves into old time country and folk tunes.
The musical journey continues, with a new found clarity driven by an undying passion that keeps knocking at his heart’s door. Inspired by his love of songwriters such as Townes Van Zandt, John Prine and Jesse Winchester who meld beauty with wit, Grady’s acoustic guitar and voice are conduits for traditional and folk musings, creating his own works on topics as wide ranging as death and vegetables.
His latest effort, Take My Hand, produced by Toronto music mainstay Aaron Comeau, is a collection of self-penned raw ballads - wide open spaces and smooth sailing vocals accompanied by intricate acoustic guitar picking and backed by a band.
Building on the recent momentum of appearances at Mariposa Folk Festival as well as European dates in France and Germany, 2014 will see the new album release and dates to support.
