Kansas City-based blueswoman Kelley Hunt has been defying description for over a decade, and she shows no sign of slowing down. With a commanding, passionate stage presence and superior skills as a vocalist, piano player and songwriter she has earned the respect of critics and fans across North America and Europe.

Kelley’s cinematic 6th release “The Beautiful Bones” no doubt poises her for a giant leap forward. The early press confirms critical acclaim lining up fast:

“More than bones prove beautiful on this scintillating release by one of soul’s best kept secrets. As she rips across strong originals like the funky “Golden Hour” to high-torque, torrid testaments like the gospel blues of “Release and Be Free”, Kelley Hunt’s time has come.”

“If there is truly a Higher Power, He/She should press PLAY on the latest release by Kansas City’s Kelley Hunt. Rest assured that the takeaway will be, despite how everything’s been going lately, everything’s going to be okay after all…”. BLUES MUSIC MAGAZINE

The new album features 12 new songs written or co-written by Hunt and takes listeners on a tour of her stylistic traditional influences bound together by themes urging a return to the recognition of what’s real and essential. Lifted by scintillating vocals from Hunt and lavish support from an all-star supporting cast, including soaring background vocals by gospel royalty The McCrary Sisters, “Bones” is looking like a game changer for this already acclaimed, fiercely independent artist and longtime MSP favorite.

Born in Kansas City, Hunt’s love for her craft was fine tuned listening to early blues, R&B, roots rock, jazz and Gospel influences – artists like Ruth Brown, Mahalia Jackson, Billie Holiday, Ann Peebles, Ray Charles, Dinah Washington, Aretha Franklin, Charles Brown, Wanda Jackson and a cross section of the New Orleans/St. Louis/KC piano traditions of Professor Longhair, Toots Washington, Johnnie Johnson and Kansas City masters Jay McShann and Mary Lou Williams among others. Before that came the sound of her mother singing jazz and blues – her first musical memories – and the influence of her New Orleans Gospel singer grandmother. Reminders of these very traditional influences are evident in Kelley’s live performances and recordings but the lyrics, soul and passion are all her own. Her career path so far has been a story of fierce independence, incredible will, unassailable cred as a blistering live performer and hard-won accomplishment.
