Gerry Rafferty was a masterful musician, songwriter and singer. Although he was a member of the Humblebums (with Billy Connolly) and Stealers Wheel, he had his greatest success as a solo artist. By the time he went solo he had honed his writing, playing and singing well - his songs were well crafted and in many ways were elegant. He wrote and sang about the world around him, and "On a Wing and a Prayer" largely focused on his divorce (of 1990) and the aftermath. Listening carefully to the songs, and reading the lyrics which are included (although they can be difficult to read as they are superimposed on graphics), you can find expressions of disappointment, sadness, vulnerability, anger and then acceptance - human emotions all. These are not the songs of "City to City"(from 1978), but songs and emotions of someone with much more life experience.
As with most Gerry Rafferty albums, there is a generous helping of music here - 12 songs that clock in at 57 min 30 sec. There is also a range of musical styles on the CD. My favourite cuts include "It's Easy to Talk," "Don't Speak of My Heart," "Don't Give Up on Me" (which includes a wonderful chorus of backup singers), and "Life Goes On" which closes the CD on a positive note. It is a very reflective CD and a nice study in human emotions. More than that, though, it is a great Gerry Rafferty CD. Rafferty worked and recorded on his own terms and his own schedule, independently of the music industry. Therefore, his later music did not get a lot of attention. That doesn't mean, however, that it should be ignored. Fans of Gerry Rafferty will certainly enjoy "On a Wing and a Prayer," and others who appreciate good music should give it a listen, too. Those who are not familiar with his music could easily become fans ( X. Pert)
