Reviews from RateYourMusic:
Escape is the definition of intellectual pretentiousness; experimentation for experimentation's sake. Two guitarists originating from the New York underground, Robert Quine (Voidoids, Lydia Lunch) and Jody Harris (Contortions, Raybeats), making their grand statement. The result is five dissonant jams passing for art: "Flagpole Jitters" (funky bassline, one guitar imitating lounge music, the other ripping the song to shreds with a noise-jazz improv), the delirious industrial riff-a-rola "Termites Of 1938" , the moody no-wave lounge "Don't Throw That Knife", the cut-up rockabilly "Pardon My Clutch" , and the funky psychedelic "Up In Daisy's Penthouse". File alongside Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music. ILY
This album starts from a single idea: putting a rhythmic groove and a bassline and adding the sounds of Jody Harris and Robert Quine to it. The result: gold. I am currently enjoying this very much, it sounds like the wet dream of everything electronic and rhythmic. Techno and house have NUTHIN to claim, this album is huge, visionary, and noisy. The ”sheets of sound” on this album are nothing short of remarkable, and if one passes over the occasionally too synthetic-sounding drums, we have a winner. Moritat
