Combining traditional ‘Manouche’ repertoire with tasteful originals and gypsy influenced modern classics, Spyglass Gypsies deliver an energetic and playful performance, displaying all the subtleties and nuances of a highly communicative and intuitive ensemble, while still retaining the fire and passion of the gypsy jazz style. Performing regularly throughout Sydney since early 2010, Spyglass Gypsies have been steadily carving out a niche with their own brand of French gypsy infused jazz and swing.

Comprised of musicians Richard Ashby (guitar), Loretta Palmeiro (clarinet/saxophone), Andrew Scott (accordion), and Shannon Haritos (double bass), their music is perfectly suited to intimate small to medium venues, allowing their light yet rich sound to be full appreciated.

The album's all-original material was composed individually by all members and brought together in rehearsal. "While we each composed material for the record separately", Ashby said, "Our goal of creating an album of original Gypsy Swing, Bolero and Bossa songs ensured that our compositions fit together perfectly while still reflecting our individual writing styles".

With numerous appearances at high profile venues and festivals including Camelot Lounge, the Art Gallery of NSW, Kiama Jazz and Blues Festival, Illawarra Jazz and Folk Festivals, the Oz Manouche Gypsy Jazz Festival and support for international touring artists such as Lollo Meier and Remi Harris, the group have brought their extensive live performance experience to the studio. "Gypsy Jazz is essentially a live music genre," Ashby said. "It was very important to us to capture the energy, spontaneity and creativity of our live performances on the record, which we did".
