My adventure with Ralph Towner’s music already began when I still was a beginner with my guitar. It is often the case that musicians get to know each other through the recordings they make. Recordings are unerasable milestones of their voyage and, at the same time, the vehicle for handing over to other artists their own experience. One great revolution of the late XIX century was, no doubt, the possibility of making sound recordings possible and easily accessible. That is not just the miracle allowing us repeated listening of the same performance, but also that of making it become a point of reference by which we measure our own development. Life, so once put it Vinicius de Moraes, is the art of meeting the other. Thanks to the grooves of their recordings I was able to acquaint myself with the creative world of many artists, and later develop my very own. Ralph Towner’s music has been with me all along, and considerably contributed to my falling in love with timbre and daring musical ideas improvised withing impeccable formal constraints. After many musical voyages shared with other musicians, this time I am on my own. Towner’s music is my trail. I could not have made a better choice. With it I go through all sorts of experiences: virtuosity, meditative atmospheres, contemplation of sheer color. Ralph Towner’s music is chisel work. Thanks to the wisdom he expresses, and the added bonus in later years of his invaluable friendship, this musical voyage of mine was made possible. (Claudio Farinone)
