Brisbane singer-songwriter Megan Cooper here delivers a 13-track debut album that comfortably straddles country traditions and contemporary pop. With the help of an impressive list of friends, including producer Michael Muchow of The Hillbilly Killers, James Gillard, and Bill Chambers, Cooper showcases a voice that is born to sing country – one part little girl sweet, one part knowing/world-weary. I personally prefer the gentler tones to her singing – when Cooper tries to belt out a big chorus it can come across as a little raw and strained. Whereas when she takes to a softer song like ‘Edie Rain’, Cooper seems in total command of the notes and tones. The instrumentation is sparse and tasteful throughout and it’s only the variation in vocals and lyrics that occasionally disappoints. For example, the lyric “I think you’re fabulous, our love could be bigger than Texas” undermines a great melody in ‘Texas’. But when it all comes together, as it does on ‘Loser’s Game’, it’s exciting – a snapshot of a talented artist finding her feet.
