From home, Peter Piek is no musician. From home, Peter Piek isn't even his name. But Peter Piechaczyk, born in Chemnitz while the city was still known as "Karl-Marx-Stadt", today resides in Leipzig as an eclectic artist who does not draw lines between painting and writing, be it of lyrics or books. Piek, a tall, perhaps at first sight stiff looking guy with floppy hair, just does what he likes. That's when it gets good. Just like "Cut off the Dying Stuff", the third album by the singing guitarist and occasional bassist. Piek recorded a dozen new songs, giving them a breezy, happy-go-lucky sound reminiscent of Conor Oberst or Passenger. Nothing makes a creak, a wobble or a sizzle as in a home production. Accordingly, songs like "Girona" or "Alive" have not lost one ounce of charm.
Supported by Danish singer Nanna Schannong for the song "Green", Peter Piek sings in a pained, breathy voice, its sound lying somewhere between Thom Yorke, Bon Iver and Sufjan Stevens. Yet not in one instance does it remotely sound as if an epigone from Saxony were taking a swing at first-grade songwriting. After approximately 600 concerts throughout Europe, China and the US, the self-taught Piek is confident about his trade...
